The Crew Day Report – Sentiero Cristallina
The first stage of the Sentiero Cristallina Hike goes from Bignasco to San Carlo through the valley Bavona, which end in the Maggiatal. The 12.2 kilometer path takes us mostly through the forest and reminds us of the movie lord of the rings. It takes us over a lot of small and big bridges. Villages which have been built with massive stones and beautiful gardens are along the way. The flora and fauna is very diverse and changes throughout the hike and in return gives us a lot of new impressions.
From Zurich we drive for about 2.5 hours in direction Locardno/Ascona. Shortly before getting to Ascona make sure you stay right and go in direction Centovalli/Vallemaggia. After that we drove another 30 minutes to Cevio until we arrived in Bignasco Posta. Bignacso is about 3.75 hours away by public transport.
The hike starts from Posta Bignasco (440 masl). Keep on the hiking route “59” (Sentiro Cristallina). After about 1.5 hours we pass the waterfall Foroglio. With its 80 meters it’s on of the largest waterfalls in the Canton of Ticino and offers a good possibility for a rest on the large rock under the besin. Alternatively the Ristorante La Froda (restaurant) will provide you with typical specialities from the local area.
From Foroglio the hike continues to San Carlo and takes us about 1.5 hours. In the upper part of the walk, the slope increases fairly. The steep walls of Val Bavona are among the steepest in Ticino. Close to San Carlo there is a cable car which was built in the 60s, in which you can reach Robiei (1900 masl) within 15 minutes. From Robiei the second stage of the hike would take you up to Lago Sfundau (2593 masl). You can avoid 850 masl by taking the cable car. If you would like to hike the second and third stage within two to three days you can sleep at the Ristorante Basodino. It has 6 rooms with a total of 12 beds.
